Patient flow: arrivals, beds, and the hour that overflows
Clinics, EDs, and wards are queues with clinical consequences. Forecast arrivals by hour and service, not a daily average that hides the 11am surge. Staffing and beds are downstream of that path.

Hour of day is the season
Clinics, EDs, and wards are queues with clinical consequences. Forecast arrivals by hour and service, not a daily average that hides the 11am surge. Staffing and beds are downstream of that path. A daily total is a board metric. It is not a roster.
15-minute load, not a daily headcount
No-shows are a second series
Forecast no-shows if you have the history. Blind overbooking is a policy. A forecast lets you overbook more on Monday and less after a holiday. Mixing no-shows into arrivals without naming them teaches a muddle.
Regimes: flu, heat, a new clinic
Respiratory season, a heat wave, a clinic that just opened nearby: the world moves. Diversions are a break — training through them as if they were demand teaches a lie. Flu-like leading series help if you will have them at origin (a public health nowcast, not the lab result you have not seen).
Arrivals as the goal
Forecast arrivals (and separately, no-shows) at the interval you staff. Predict.ai will pick up weekday and holiday shape. Alert when the ED leaves the band instead of finding out at huddle. What-if a nearby clinic closes — that is a scenario on the live champion, not a hallway estimate.
FAQ
- Should I forecast no-shows or just overbook?
- Forecast no-shows as their own series if you have the history. Blind overbooking is a policy. A forecast lets you overbook more on Monday and less after a holiday.
- What about ambulance diversions?
- Treat them as a break or a scenario. Training through a diversion week as if it were demand will teach a lie.

Workforce and staffing forecasts
Nurses, agents, cooks, field techs — the cost is people on a clock. A staffing forecast is arrivals or contacts by interval, with a band wide enough for a call-out list, not a single headcount that makes Tuesday look like Saturday.
Guide
Holidays and calendar effects
A calendar is the cheapest accurate feature in the building. Christmas, payday, school terms, a 4-day week, Ramadan, Chinese New Year — if the model has to rediscover those from residuals, you are wasting folds on a date table.

Nowcasting
Nowcasting is a forecast with a horizon of this afternoon. The official close has not posted; you still have to staff the evening or dispatch the next hour. You use faster series — traffic, partial files, a weather nowcast — to estimate the present.
