Nowcasting: estimating today before the official number lands
Nowcasting is a forecast with a horizon of this afternoon. The official close has not posted; you still have to staff the evening or dispatch the next hour. You use faster series — traffic, partial files, a weather nowcast — to estimate the present.

The present is late
Official numbers are late on purpose. Registers close. Meters settle. Claims get coded. You still have to staff the evening, dispatch the next hour, or trade the balance of the day. Nowcasting estimates the window that is already happening. It is a forecast with a horizon of this afternoon, using a faster clock.
Today, before the official close
Faster clocks
- Same-day traffic, check-ins, or a partial POS file for a sales nowcast.
- Real-time load or a weather nowcast for the grid.
- Appointment arrivals versus scheduled for a clinic.
- Card authorizations versus settled revenue for a processor.
If everything you have lands with the official close, you are not nowcasting. You are waiting. The driver has to be known before the target is published, or it is leakage with a journalism name.
Do not mash it into the weekly buy
A nowcast and a 12-week replenishment path are different products. Stretching one model across both is how you get a Tuesday afternoon number that was optimized for next quarter. Score them apart. Use the nowcast to add a closer or buy a peak megawatt. Use the weekly path to buy cases.
A second goal, not a stretched one
In Predict.ai, give the nowcast its own goal and horizon — hours, not weeks. Driver discovery will look for the fast series in the workspace. The live path updates as those signals land. Alerts fire when the afternoon leaves the band, which is the whole point: you still have hours to act.
Marketplace weather and traffic series exist for this clock. Do not paste a daily temperature into an hourly nowcast and call it leading. Align the clocks or you will nowcast yesterday.
FAQ
- How is nowcasting different from forecasting?
- A forecast asks about a future window you cannot see yet. A nowcast asks about a window that is already happening, whose official measurement is delayed. Same math family, different contract.
- What data does a nowcast need?
- Something that arrives faster than the target: hourly traffic, a partial POS file, real-time load, appointment check-ins. If everything you have lands with the official number, you are not nowcasting.

Guide
Choosing a forecast horizon
The horizon is how far ahead the forecast looks; the grain is how finely it ticks. Pick both from the decision they serve — lead time, planning cycle, and how fast the world can change — not from what the model can print.
Guide
Finding leading indicators
A leading indicator moves before the number you care about. Search queries before orders, bookings before departures, parts receipts before output. The lag is the product; correlation on the same day is just a mirror.
Guide
Workforce and staffing forecasts
Nurses, agents, cooks, field techs — the cost is people on a clock. A staffing forecast is arrivals or contacts by interval, with a band wide enough for a call-out list, not a single headcount that makes Tuesday look like Saturday.
Use case
Digital traffic forecasting
Forecast traffic, transactions, and concurrency before campaigns, launches, and seasonal peaks.
Use case
Energy load forecasting
Forecast demand by interval, feeder, zone, and customer class with weather-driven uncertainty.
